Ylee, different, huh? You're not fooling me any, son. That's just a polite euphimism for 'nuttier than a fruitcake."
Sandi and Pros, white rabbits back to you!
Thank you so much for the reminder, I will never complain that it's a repeat. MOM had a growth removed from her forehead back in the late 80's, I have been avoiding the full sun ever since then. Of course, folks might think that's not so hard to do here at my location up north, but the full sun glaring off a fresh snow can be quite intense and almost blinding. We cover our bodies to stay warm in the winter, so we think that we are safe, but I am almost certain that her exposed forehead got way too much sun, even in winter. As for me, I try to cover myself as much as possible, and stick to the shade in the summer when I can't avoid the sun...
Once again, thanks for the reminder BUG :-)
Yeah, an annual kick in the pants is what a lot of us need to remember to make that appt for a checkup.
You're right that sun on snow can intensify those nasty UV rays.
Don't forget cloudy days are dangerous, too. My Mama said she got one of the worst burns of her life on a cloudy day at the beach.
I was really late last year hauling my carcass into dry dock to get the barnacles scraped. I've been doing it in April/May/June for quite sometime but, somehow or other, last year I didn't get in until October. BUT I did get in!
I'll be headed up the road to Dad's in the a.m. I'll be coming back either late Sunday or early Monday.
My internet provider is due at the house Monday afternoon, so hopefully, I'll be back online soon. Once hooked up, I've got to figure out how to get my Norton Internet Security transferred to my laptop. I'd just renewed my contract in February, I think it was.
I had to transfer my contract when I got my last computer but it has been so long ago, I forgot how I did it. I think I emailed Customer Service and they did it remotely but I'm not sure.
The laptop already had Norton on it, as a 30 day free trial thingy. I hope it will be an easier process than I'm thinking its gonna be.
Have a safe trip!
Have a lovely weekend with your Dad and family, and hopefully after Monday you are up and internet-running again!!
PS - WU is not updating....:(
A bit late checking in but we had a busy afternoon.
I arrived at Dad's about quarter of twelve, to find an empty house and no note to indicate where they were.
Since I can't call on the phone, I decided to drive over to my aunt and uncle's to see if they knew where Dad and L were.
Turns out, they were over there, as were some other relatives from O'burg. They'd all gathered for lunch together.
I didn't leave there until around 3:00, then went to Wally World to look at microwaves. They had the model I wanted but not in white. I'll keep looking.
Dad and I have been visiting, catching up on family gossip and eating a light supper. We had a BIG feed for lunch. It was good but I can't eat like that everyday.
Though the drive wasn't bad, I'm ready for an early night.
I'll try to check in tomorrow!
I use a free Anti virus software - Avast. My son-in-law told me about it. I've been using it on near 3 years and I've had not one issue. You can't beat free! I got it for my mom too. She was subscribing to the one Verizon offered her (Verizon is her Internet provider), and it was truly slowing down her computer. She stopped paying for that and went for Avast and hasn't looked back since.
They have a version you can pay for too, but I just haven't needed it.
Hope you have a nice visit with your dad, and I'll catch up with you when you get home.
Ylee, I'm glad to see that you're planning to take advantage of the health fair screening at work. Those things are always a good way to get a quick check to see if there's anything to be concerned with.
My employer offers them all the time. We are a teaching hospital and screenings are a good way for students to get a little hands on practice, as well as for the employees to get a quick check. They also offer other 'Worksite' screenings that don't involve students.
Hi, Karen, I've been meaning to swing by and see if you have an active blog up. I get out of the habit during the school year, as you don't always have one up. You are one busy lady!
Not much on the agenda here today. Smom has taken my truck and a borrowed trailer to an annual flea market that is held in Ninety Six, SC. She loaded up a bunch of stuff to sell.
This leaves Dad and myself to just hang out this morning.
I'm not sure what time we'll expect her back. The sale is from 8 until 12.
Sandi, as much as I've kind of enjoyed not having the pull of the internet for the past few weeks, it has been inconvenient. I couldn't check my email for family messages evenings and weekends. Doing it at work was limited to lunch or after I clocked out.
Hopefully, I'll be up and running again this week.
With the laptop, I won't be stuck off in the dining room. I'll be able to watch TV and blog a bit at the same time. With the desktop, it was do one or the other.
BBL
Have a good day and safe trip home, either today or tomorrow.
Sunday greetings from my spinning Iris and me.
I've got everything loaded in the truck and will head back home after lunch.
With the time change, I've got plenty of time to get home before dark.
I have a little lap desk that will be handy for using my laptop in the living room. I am aware that they can get hot and you shouldn't block the vents or they'll overheat.
I won't be able to check in when I get home; it will have to wait until I get back to work or get my laptop set up. I also have to get in touch with my antivirus/internet security customer service dept and have my subscription transferred to my laptop. I won't get online with it until then.
Until later, folks!
I met my internet provider techs at the house this a.m. and I am now online.
I'm not sure how I like using the laptop. The keyboard is really weird and I'm mistyping everything.
There's no number pad, so I can't do my alternate keys to make signs, symbols or put that little accentrophe over the 'e' in my name. I don't like that.
I know I can plug in an external keyboard; I'd just have to figure out how to do that. Plus, that would
be awkward away from the computer desk.
I find myself reaching for the mouse.
Also, I don't think I can hook up my printer. For one thing, it's REALLY old and if there's a port for a printer, the printer lines aren't going to fit. isn't going to work.
I guess I'll eventually figure it all out.
Back to work!
Good luck!
Bug get a blue tooth plug in and you can get a mouse to use with lappy. It plugs into the US v port. My hubby loves the availability of a mouse.
Glad you had such a nice visit with your dad. You are such a positive influence in his life.
We are still watching season 2 of Downton Abbey. I love, love it. Mr. Bates is my favorite but he has just gone off with his hateful wife. Hope he reappears sometime soon.
We finally got some rain yesterday. More on its way today. We are about seven inches behind. Now maybe we won't have the smell of smoke everyday. Even my grass and bushes look better this morning.
I use a wireless mouse on my large laptop as it sits on a desk, but the little net book I use in front of the TV I use the pad .... but I do use both hands!
I use the index finger of the left hand to click the mouse and the index and middle finger of my right hand to act as a "cursor" mover!
I have been so busy this morning, I didn't realize it what time it was. No wonder my stomach was growling!
Ylee, Ogal, Sandi - thanks for the tips. I'm sure I'll get this laptop thing down pat. Eventually! You can teach an old dog new tricks; it just takes a little longer.
Shore, yessiree bob, you got here before I did.
I probably won't have much time to check in tomorrow.
I have an appt with my dentist to start working on those two messed up teeth. Normally, I wouldn't take an 11 a.m. appt. Not at lunch time. But one tooth needed attention, asap, and I didn't have much choice.
I guess I'll be sipping tomato soup, as I'll be too numbed up to have anything else.
Today, I'm feasting on homemade chicken perlo and yellow squash with Vidalia onions. Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow you may be Novacained!
Also read your tooth problem w/interest. Since I had mine cleaned last month I've had a toothache! I keep hoping it will get better on its own as the tooth has had a gold crown on it for about 40 years! I cannot remember if I had a root canal--must not have if its hurting now.
How is Gus? Still waiting for his photo :)
Press congrats on your survival, proof you can survive it if caught.
But the best cure is to prevent it and we have to get that message out about over exposure to sun, using sunblock and the danger of tanning salons.
Amen! Amen! and Amen!
Health fair was a bust. :( Instead of an examination, the lady gives me a business card to a local dermatologist. Oh, well, guess I'll have to give them a call!
Enjoy your pesto!
I also have some yogurt and, for later, sliced banana and strawberries.
By suppertime, I'll be good to go. And probably really hungry.
Janet, I was thinking about that the other day. I know I have a little disposable camera around somewhere. If I can find it, I'll start taking some pics and maybe, just maybe, I'll get Gus' pic out here for all to admire!
Presslord and NEwguy, my hide is clean, other than what the dermatogist calls 'barnacles', which come with age. Makes me feel a bit like the bottom of the U.S.S. Constitution.
However, I do go in for regular checkups. I have risk factors. I'm Scots-Irish, fair skinned, don't tan. I burn, freckle and peel. I am of the generation that was told "The sun is GOOD for you." I spent many an hour on the beach, basting myself with baby oil and iodine. A human turkey.
If we didn't come home glowing in the dark, like some sort of mutant, we hadn't been out there long enough.
The main reason I do this blog is in memory of my brother, my only sibling. I lost him in 2008 to melanoma.
If I can kick just one person in the pants to go in and get checked, I feel like I've done my job.
Ylee, I'm being careful. Esp since, like an idiot, I wore white pants today. White pants are a magnet for stains and I've got tomato soup, of all the soups to choose from. Duh...
Sorry to hear that the health fair was a bust but do make an appt to go in and get checked.
Is there a teaching hospital in your area? Sometimes they do free skin checks to allow students to get some hands on practice.
I did that, long before my brother was diagnosed. Partly because they handed out little goodie bags with samples. Lotions, sunscreens, lip balms, etc.
Once he was diagnosed, I started going annually, like clockwork.
I make them break out the blowtorch and freeze those things off. They're benign but ugly and they just keep popping up all over.
Now, my dad and his dad have had basal cells removed. Mostly on the head, face, neck areas. Both of them spent a LOT of time outside and I don't recall seeing them wear hats much.
Dad sold tractor equipment for a long time, then taught agricultural courses at his local technical college. He also loved working in the yard.
His dad was a farmer. Need I say more?
My brother worked construction, spent weekends at the lake with friends and did a lot of gardening.
As for me? I spend time outside. I try to remember to use sunscreen and wear a hat. I don't always do it.
I haven't sunbathed in years. I finally accepted the fact that I don't tan. Never have. Never will. Trying to do so was just an exercise in futility. And, by the time I threw in the beachtowel on that, it was becoming obvious that the sun was NOT good for us, like they kept telling us when we were coming up. So, it was just as well.
Wouldn't it be easier, and cheaper, to have them out, if they are back teeth?
I feel your pain.. you are now a "dental diva" also...
I am very glad my dentist is my brother in law... he has to do it for what ever insurance pays...
and that is not much...Many years I went over my "cap"...
I dread the day he retires and Hubby and I have to start paying for Dental treatment!
Good luck with your laptop... I am not good on them either.. but I know one of the days I need to get one and learn..
enjoy your weekend.
I'm just glad I upped my dental coverage during open enrollment last fall. It still doesn't pay what I wish it would pay but it will be a lot more than my old dental basic. Basic wasn't really worth having.
The tooth has settled down and isn't screaming when I put a little pressure on the temporary cap, like it was doing. I can eat normally, too. I was trying to chew on the other side but I'd forget and YOWZAOGOODGOSHALMIGHTYOWOWOWOWOWOWOW!!!!
I have just been SO busy here at work this week, trying to catch up, as well as handle all the new stuff coming in. I need to be a three headed octopus with multiple computer monitors for the ultimate in multitasking.
You'll get used to a laptop with time. I actually have a rather large laptop. It's an eMachine and I actually have a number pad. If this picture isn't it exactly, it's pretty close!
I use mine like Sandi does hers. I generally sit in the living room with it and use it at night. During the day I'm always on my desktop - as my external hard drive is attached to it, and so is my printer. Plus, I keep all things financial on the desktop, so there are just some things I have to do on it.
I also purchased one of those laptop desks to put under my lap. Again, looks similar to this one, but the bottom isn't as puffy.
It's a tad wider than my laptop, so I have purchased a small mouse to use with my laptop. If I'm just browsing, I don't use it, but if I'm really working with the computer, then I plug it in.
I have found that I have scaled back my time online a lot. Unless I have something that I really need to look up or do, I'd rather work on my jig saw puzzle or work a Sudoku puzzle while watching TV. I check email every day, but sometimes that's about all I do! It varies from day to day, just like life does!
Matter of fact, it's time for me to get off now, as we're riding our bikes to the store to rent a movie for tonight, and then over to Trader Joe's to pick up a loaf of bread and some bananas!
Sun is out, so I have to get out an take advantage of that. We're in our May Gray period, and every day starts with the stuff, and if the sun eventually makes an appearance, I have to get my Vitamin D!!!
Need to call my cousin to see if she's up for company this morning. I got her machine last night and I won't call her after 7:30 or so. She tends to hit the bed early, esp if she's been out.
Bug just in and out.
Great two page article on Charleston in the Wall Street Journal this morning. A great plan to follow if you are a tourist in your magnificent city.
Hope Gus is still doing well. Have a fun weekend!
Good luck!
(Don't show this to Gus! He thinks he owns you!)
Have a great day tomorrow!
Happy Mother's Day
Oh, do I sympathize with you about that laptop. I hate mine. I know, I know - if I used it more I'd get used to it, and so on. But that touchpad drives me crazy. I always plug in my mouse and use it. The keyboard is fine, but I can't do without my mouse.
The one thing that drives me crazy is the key in the lower left-hand corner that erases everything - POOF! - if you hit it. I have no idea what it's supposed to be for. Maybe it's the erase key! But I kept hitting it, thinking it was the Ctrl key. It isn't.
I just opened mine up and looked - I do have a number pad. I've never used mine - isn't that pathetic? I figure if I can't handle my numbers with paper and pencil, I've wandered into a place I don't belong anyway.
I have my appointment with the dermatologist this Wednesday. I'd already made it before your reminder, because I've had a couple of "somethings" pop up on one arm. Luckily, one is fairly new, so she can see what they look like in early and late stages. I've never been to this doc, but one of my friends goes to her and likes her a lot. We'll see.
I've never had much problem, but I didn't sunbathe much as a kid. There were occasional trips to the pool in the summer, and I would try laying out in the backyard, but I usually got bored and quit after a time. I didn't get a really bad sunburn until I was in my late 20s, and burned a little when I first started sailing, but I've been told since I didn't start getting my real sun exposure until I was in my 40s, my risk is somewhat less. I guess we'll see when I visit the good doctor!
How's the tooth? Feeling better? I hope so. Tomato soup is lovely stuff, but not day after day!
Here's a little bouquet for you - quite a show, I must say!
The Life of Flowers
I was going to tell you about the right click on the mouse pad, but Ylee already told you :)
I just got so frustrated with that laptop Saturday afternoon, after visiting my cousin, that I just slammed it shut and shoved it aside to finish charging up.
I had even pulled out the little manual thingy that came with it but it's like Greek to me. (My apologies to you Greek speakers out there for the cliché) What I need is a copy of 'Laptops for Dummies.'
I'll have to check the pad thing and see if there are any left/right buttons.
I'm sure that, one day, I'll look back at all this and wonder why I thought it was all so hard but that day ain't here yet.
I do find that I'm getting a lot of those little things done around the house since I can't get online.
One good thing.
You will love the freedom, once you get used to it - and yes, all laptops have either
a) separate left and right clickers under the mousepad, or
b) separate left and right clickers incorporated into the bottom of the mouse pad!
I mean, here I am, sitting in the conservatory, using the laptop working on its batteries, because we are having one humdinger of a T&L storm so I have unplugged all the other electrical sockets! I can converse with you - without the need for electricity .... until, that is, the lightening hits the phone line!!! lol
Good morning. Is everything all right with you? Have not seen much of you on the blogs, my guess is that you are very busy. Happy Wednesday to you.
I did espy the right/left clickers after Ylee brought it to my attention.
I was AWOL yesterday. Home sick; had been up and down most of the night with GI issues and that's as much as I'm going to say about that. Spent a little time perusing the laptop manual but was so sleep deprived it made even less sense than usual.
Feeling much better today.
Hope all's well - off to work I go. I need to doublecheck everything I did this a.m. before I had my full dose of caffeine!
Good girl, Shore! Glad to hear that your hide is in good shape and you only had one ooglie frozen off.
I've popped up with two or three I want to get rid of. They're nothing to worry about; they're benign. I just don't like 'em and they tend to be dry and itchy. I'm not due to go back until October but I might set up an appt in Sept and start working my way back to May/June.
Really busy today. What with being out Tuesday and most of yesterday morning was meetings. Our weekly group meeting, which is blessedly short, and our monthly staff meeting, which runs about an hour and a half, more or less.
The staff meeting is held in an auditorium about 2 blocks away from our office, as we have no area large enough to accomodate everyone. About quarter of 9:00, we all have to troop off. Rain or shine. If we try to have it in the office, a large number of folks seem to be afraid someone will see them and they tend to hide around corners and in cubicles, instead of being out in the open. They can't do that in the auditorium, though they all try to sit as far away from the front as possible. The managers rope off the back seats.
Why do they do that? As long as I've worked here, that's the way they are. It reminds me of pep rallies in the high school gym.
Consider Microsoft Windows Security as the anti-virus. It is free, uncomplicated and it works well. You'll love the silent updates.
Good on the Melanoma warnings. My brother died from melanoma and my ex-wife died a few weeks ago from melanoma.
Nasty business, melanoma in any form.
I hope the office has been a little more "gentle" today.. no meetings or computer glitches!
Been to the Garden show in the city centre - got a good bargain. Geraniums already in flower, £1.25 each or 6 for a £5. When I got them home the lady had put two packets of seeds, nasturtiums and larkspur, into the bottom of the bag!
The workload is a bit lighter today and I think I see light at the end of the tunnel. Knock on wood! (BANG, BANG, BANG!!!!)
Sorry to hear of your loss, Jonas.
I've used Logitech before, so may take a look at their wireless mice.
((Code))). Give some of those to your daughter, too! I figured you'd pop up at some point, knowing I usually put up a reminder to getcher skin checked blog in May.
Sandi, you cleaned up. Geraniums and some seeds, to boot!
I've got one nice red geranium left from last year but it does need repotting. I've got to get myself outside and do some of that. I've several things that need repotting.
I've also a couple of things in pots that I'd like to put in the ground but I don't really know where. Esp since Hubby is The Tool Man with a lawnmower or weedeater. I have to keep that in mind, when planting things. The man is a menace!
