I can’t believe that summer is almost over. I know it is a cliché, but it just seems like it was Memorial Day weekend to me.
Summer in California is always such a fun and great time of year. The many microclimates offer just about everyone a comfort level and variety to choose from. Not too hot or humid, it is a beautiful season in the Golden State. Virtually no rain (except in the deserts and Sierras) and endless days of inland sun (and fog along the coast.) I love the golden hills and the green California Live Oaks. The fog makes the beach mysterious and moody. Personally, I prefer the beach during the other times of year when the sun is out, a nice consolation, I guess, for having to say goodbye to my favorite time of year.
I guess you know summer is really over when Costco starts putting out the Christmas decorations as they did this week and all the camping and summer sports items are high up on the stacks. Had to kill some time in one yesterday as I got new tires put on my SUV. The weather forecasters are predicting possible first season rain as early as late September this year. My balding tires would not have been fun on the slick freeways after the first rain. Always, a treacherous time to be out driving as the accumulated oil from the rainless summer mixed with water turns the roads and highways into skating rinks and demolition derbies, until a really hard rain washes the oil off.
The trees are starting to get full and loud with migrating birds as they start making their way south. The days are getting noticeably shorter, always something I need to adjust to as I start to miss the long hours of daylight. Again, the consolation, is seeing the beautiful sunsets out on the Pacific Ocean again in the early evening.
Soon it will be time to enjoy the trees turning color in the foothills and Halloween in San Francisco is always a big event. As the winter rains and darkness descend around Thanksgiving I can take out all my indoor projects and resume where I left off last Spring. And perhaps plan a escape trip back to the sun in Southern California’s desert and winter retreat.
