Stark Severe Watches & Warnings NOAA Weather Radio

Special Statement
Statement as of 2:37 PM CST op 24 januari 2015

...Wintry travel expected on Sunday...

A storm system will be moving southeast out of the Dakotas...and should be centered in west central Illinois by sunrise Sunday. Rain is expected to spread into the area late tonight...then change over to snow on Sunday.

Current indications are that areas from Galesburg to Bloomington should change over to snow by mid morning...with snow continuing through the afternoon. Along the I-72 corridor...the change over should occur by midday. Locations between I-72 and I-70 will see a mixture of rain and snow occur much of the afternoon.

The heavier snow amounts are currently expected along and north of I-74 due to the earlier switch to snow...with around 2 inches possible. Totals around an inch are possible as far south as I-72... with minor accumulations further south due to the extended mixture of rain and snow. As temperatures will be above freezing much of the time...any snow that accumulates on roadways will be fairly slushy. However...temperatures are expected to fall below freezing in the afternoon north and northwest from Peoria...which will cause slippery and icy conditions.

Any southward deviation in the forecast track would increase the risk of higher snow the switch to snow would occur sooner. If you are traveling Sunday...remain alert for this possibility and check the latest forecast before leaving.
